Are You Ready for Christ’s Return?

I was driving along, a few weeks ago, when I glanced in my right side mirror at the warning written on it, “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.” Immediately, my mind went back to when I was seven or eight, standing on my Aunt Elema’s porch. Back in those days, a lot of the houses had raised porches. My aunt had a large house with a wrap-around porch that was on the high side, especially for an eight year old. You had to walk up five or six steps to reach the porch’s landing.

It was Texas in the summer time. Everything was dry. There wasn’t any grass next to the porch, not even any top soil, just hard-as-cement ground. My aunt had a big family. Her house was the happening place to hang out. Jumping off the front porch was one of the fun things we did.

On this particular day, I had borrowed someone’s glasses just to see what wearing glasses was like. I begged and begged until they let me put them on. Everything seemed so different through those lenses. You know that dizzy sensation you get when your eyes are trying to adjust. WOW!!

I was so impressed with the difference in my vision that this wonderful idea popped into my head. How about if I were to get a long pole and jump off the front porch with the glasses on? Now that would be fun! It certainly would be different! Usually when I jumped off the porch, I would sit on the edge of the porch and jump down. Even from that vantage point, the remaining distance to the ground was kind of scarey. But that’s what made it exciting!

My older cousins were there and they kept telling me not to jump, but what did they know? I was Determined. I picked up this long stick that reached all the way from the porch down to the ground. I planned it out in my mind. I mean I could feel the hardness of the clay ground under the stick. How difficult could this be? All I had to do was jump carefully. Through the glasses, the ground looked very far away. I’d have plenty of time to catch my fall. It was a good thing I had that stick!

I squatted holding the stick in my left hand.

One… two… three.   I jumped.

All of a sudden, my knees hit the ground. My hands hit the ground. But especially my knees. I hit that ground so hard, it seemed like the ground had reached up and slapped me. You’d better believe I took those glasses off!

I had to, in order to check out my hands and my knees! I had torn up my knees. I went limping into my Aunt Elema’s house, knees bloody and palms all scratched up. My Aunt patched me up and told me to stop jumping off the porch. She didn’t have to tell me that again. You’d better believe there were many lessons I learned from that experience. LOL  One lesson was that objects can be a lot closer than they appear.

Why am I telling you this story? When I was driving through the forest preserve and saw those words on my side mirror, I thought about Jesus Christ. God used my side mirror to remind me that Jesus’s return is a lot closer than it appears. I can’t get caught up in what I think is right and miss the truth, that only He is the Truth, the Light, and the Way to His Father, Almighty God. Jesus is Love in the flesh and He’s coming back. No man knows the hour of his return, so we have to get ready.

I want to be ready so I made myself a ‘will’ list.

1. I will give Christ my life. [check]

2. Now that I am God’s daughter, I will choose to daily work on getting to know Him better by recognizing Him and acknowledging Him as He walks with me.  [working on this!]

3. I will listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying to me directly through His Word, and indirectly through other believers, circumstances, prayer, and inward impressions.  [working on this!]

4. Every day, I will awake with renewed determination to enjoy the day, love God, others, and myself passionately. [working on this!]

5. Every day, I will trust and obey God completely and with the right attitude in my heart. As Betty Robinson, wife of Evangelist James Robinson, once told her children, “Obey all the way, right away, and in a happy way.” [working on this!]

Every time I remember and work on my “will” list, everything else falls into place. I’m excited!! My Savior is coming back soon and I’m going to be ready!

Please return soon and I’ll share more with you. Until then, don’t go jumping off any porches with a stick!

I love you!

I'm more than half of a century old! That sounds 'cooler' than saying I'm in my fifties! LOL My husband and I have been married for thirty plus years and have a son, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. I'm surrounded by a loving Christian family: mom, dad, sister, brother and their families. I love to garden, draw, paint, read, sing, compose, and work with young people. On the other hand, I also love to spend time around the 'young at heart.' I love to have fun and to laugh. I try to make the most of each day and enjoy it in God's presence. I love performing random acts of kindness to brighten someone's day! I'm learning how to be at peace with the unique person I am and to appreciate the way that God has made me. Hey! It's all a part of the journey!
