Love Overflow Part I (Loving God)

What does coffee and love have in common?

When I was very small, I visited my grandparents often. When my Pawpaw (My Dad’s father) would come home from work in  the evenings, my Bigmama would have his coffee ready. He liked it black with a lot of sugar. What’s more, he had a ritual that I adored.

He would first load his cup up with sugar. Then, he would pour the coffee slowly in. I would wait with eager anticipation to see if he would stop pouring once it reached the top. Like he’d done as long as I could remember, Pawpaw would allow the dark liquid to pour over the rim of his cup until it almost filled the saucer beneath. Next, he would blow and drink the coffee in the saucer first, then he would drink the remainder left in the cup.

Often, I would always watch in fascination and beg (that’s right, I’m not ashamed to say it), beg him for the saucer. “Oh, PawPaw” I’d plead in my most pitiful voice, “ please can I have some!” (Can’t you hear my Southern accent coming through, loud and clear?)  He would tease me and say, “Alright, it’s gonna make you black.” “I don’t care!” I’d respond. (My grandfather always said black coffee makes you black, that’s why his skin was so dark.) He’d chuckle a little and very carefully pass the saucer to me and tell me to blow it.

That was my signal that I’d get to drink a little coffee with him. And oh how it was ‘mmm mmm  good’! Now here I am, all of these years later, still thinking about my grandfather’s quiet spirit and his small but meaningful demonstration of love.

What does my ‘black coffee’ story and God’s love have in common? Like the overflow of the sweet hot liquid onto the saucer,  God wants you to remember that His love overflowed into your life. God demonstrated His love in that He loved us first. God wanted someone else to love so He created me. My birth was not an accident. What I do or don’t do does matter. I was born, for such a time as this, to love. I are greatly needed. The world needs more love and I was created to love. More than that, I was created to be loved by God and to love Him in return.

It is God’s desire that as you take a step towards Him, and He takes a step towards you and reveals  Himself to you, that you will experience the depth, height, width, and breadth of his love for you as well. It’s His desire that you will come to know Him and the power of His resurrection. God wants His love to reside in you, settle down deep inside of you, and flood your life with living water, overflowing out of your life into the lives of those who know and those who will come to know you.

He has written marvelous plans in the Book of Life just for you and me. Jesus Christ came and died that we might have an abundant life, not just brimming, but overflowing.

However, there is one catch.

You know it, we’ll talk about it next time! LOL

Until then, may His love overflow into your heart.  It’s the best way  to etj3!

May God continue to bless you.

Scriptures to take with you on the journey:

1 John 3:18 – Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

1 John 4:7-21 It begins like this: “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”

1 John 5:3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

Philippians 1:9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,

Question for today – What have you done to to fall deeper in love with Jesus Christ this week?

About Administrator

I'm more than half of a century old! That sounds 'cooler' than saying I'm in my fifties! LOL My husband and I have been married for thirty plus years and have a son, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. I'm surrounded by a loving Christian family: mom, dad, sister, brother and their families. I love to garden, draw, paint, read, sing, compose, and work with young people. On the other hand, I also love to spend time around the 'young at heart.' I love to have fun and to laugh. I try to make the most of each day and enjoy it in God's presence. I love performing random acts of kindness to brighten someone's day! I'm learning how to be at peace with the unique person I am and to appreciate the way that God has made me. Hey! It's all a part of the journey!
